This article dissect the social structuring of bodily capital and bodily labor among professional fighters in an American metropolis based on a three-year apprenticeship of the craftt and ethnography of a boxing gym in the black ghetto of Chicago. The pugilist’s body is simulteanously his means of production, the raw materials he and his handlers (trainer and manager) have to work with and on, and the somatized product of his past training and extant mode of living.
