The Philosophical Contribution of Lenin in Gramsci’s Critique of Croce’s History of Europe
Abstract: Through the instruments of new Gramscian philology, this article reconstructs the philosophical and political relevance of the judgement of Lenin as “the greatest modern theorist of philosophy of praxis” within Gramsci’s critique of Croce’s History of Europe. To this aim, a first part reconstructs the way in which, in the Prison Notebooks, Gramsci proposes to understand Lenin’s philosophical contribution to Marxism, finding its premise in the theoretical studies conducted during the period of his stay in Moscow. The second part investigates how this new way of interpreting Lenin’s philosophical contribution is used by Gramsci within his critique of Croce’s History of Europe. A third part focuses on the indirect correspondence with Togliatti within which Gramsci constructs his critique of Croce’s book.
